For Immediate Release

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Ryan Turek for the 2010-11 season.

The Southfield, MI native joins the Salmon Kings after two seasons with the Alaska Aces. In 2009-10, Turek dressed for 60 games with the Aces accumulating 10 points (3g-7a) and 85 minutes in penalties.  He also participated in all four of Alaska’s 2010 Kelly Cup Playoff contests recording one goal with four penalty minutes.

“Ryan is a very talented young defenseman that brings an all-around skill set to our blue line,” General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison. “He will be counted on to play in all situations and will be an integral part of the defense. This is a great addition as it adds youth and skill to our line-up.”

The 22-year-old defender joined the Aces midway into the 2008-09 campaign and finished the season with 35 games in Alaska while accruing three goals and three assists for six points while serving 26 minutes in penalties. Turek also competed in 19 Kelly Cup Playoff games that spring scoring seven points (1g-6a) and tallying eight penalty minutes, helping lead Alaska into the Kelly Cup Final.

The 6-0, 185 lb. Turek has competed in 95 career professional games, totaling six goals and 10 assists for 16 points with 111 minutes in penalties.

Turek was drafted in the fourth round (#94 overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues.

Prior to turning professional, Turek spent three seasons in the NCAA with Michigan State University. In 80 career games as a Spartan he scored nine assists while amassing 54 penalty minutes. During the 2007 season, Turek helped lead the Spartans to the NCAA Championship.

For two seasons (2004-05 and 2005-06) the defenseman competed in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Omaha Lancers, where he notched 39 points (20g-19a) and 123 minutes in penalties in 97 career games. He also dressed for nine total playoff games with the Lancers netting two goals and adding one assist for three points while serving four minutes in penalties.

Turek began his junior hockey career with the Texarkana Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for the 2003-04 campaign. In 29 games with Texarkana he registered 13 points (6g-7a) while accumulating 90 penalty minutes, and was named to the NAHL All-Rookie Team.

I'm not sure why folks think this. Certainly you guys are getting a few impact players who once played for Alaska, but in the case of Stef and Martin, neither finished the season with the Aces last year. Both were traded... so what you're really getting are a former Charlotte Checker and a former Elmira Jackal. I don't believe either of them were offered contracts with the Aces for the 2010-2011 season.

Of course, most Aces fans would have preferred that Alaska signed Martin and Turek for the upcoming season... myself included. It will be odd seeing them in Victoria sweaters, for sure. I think they (especially Martin) will quickly become fan favorites. You're getting a couple solid defensemen there. Enjoy!

Good player to get for the coming season, Martin will go good with Turek. Tio, something happened up in Alaska last season that we don't know all about cause Imbeault left the team under odd circumstances. Now players are traded or have left but that's the minors for you.

Sorry Tio, it was a harsh comment on my part. I do hope the Aces can get some good players there this year...not too good though  Wink  Wes Goldie as you know is available. eusa_doh

BTW did you and Redwing Ron catch any 60 pounders this year? I guess Ron can always use some fresh and really large fish heads for the upcoming season to toss on the ice Smiley
